    I own one of these. I also own a 2001 Gibson J-45 and here's the deal, this Epiphone J-45 sounds identical to a Gibson J-45. There are a lot of comparison videos, but those videos always compare the modern Gibson J-45 Standard to this Epiphone J-45 and the problem with that comparison is the modern Gibson J-45 has a synthetic bone (TUSQ) nut and saddle which makes it sound distinctly different from real bone, the Epiphone uses real bone for the nut and saddle, which is vintage appropriate spec and also found on some models like the 50's and 60's "original". When you compare a Gibson J-45 with real bone nut and saddle to this, you'll find they sound the same... Little nuance differences the same you get between any two instruments. These are incredible guitars.

    Interesting you feel it suits the mediums better, as I've found that too. It is quite a sturdily built guitar, and it seems to need that extra. Currently using Martin SP Phosphor Bronze 13s and the sound strummed is a nice balance of warmth and crispness even after months. I guess as the strings age it helps the bottom end a bit too.

    • @VenancioPortalatin
      @VenancioPortalatin 2 месяца назад

      Yeah, I don't normally used mediums on my acoustics but I had a set so I just thought I'd give it a try. Totally gives it more than the stock light gauge strings. Plays better too. I'm using the Martin Flexible Core's Phosphor bronze 13's and so far am really loving them on this guitar.

  • @Getoffmylawn9

    I've bought this guitar which im learning to play on and was wondering if changing the strings would help make it easier to learn and play on?

    • @VenancioPortalatin
      @VenancioPortalatin 2 месяца назад

      You can go with a lighter gauge string which can help a bit. However, sounds like you just need a setup. Find a good local music store with a guitar tech and spend the few bucks for a proper setup to get it playing it's best. Since you're a beginner I assume you don't know how to make those adjustments yourself which is why i recommend a proper tech do it for you. Tell them you want the lowest action possible without any buzzing because you're a beginner and trying to make it play it's best.

    • @VenancioPortalatin
      @VenancioPortalatin 2 месяца назад

      @@Getoffmylawn9 yes, you can adjust the trussrod. This guitar has one. It's under the small plastic cover on the headstock. You have to remove the cover to make the adjustments. Plenty of videos on how to make those adjustments. Super fine adjustments can make major differences. If you're worried about messing it up then trust me and take it to a professional for a setup. It's totally worth it.

    I bought the Desert Sand Baja Telecaster in 2007 and have kept it in A class condition... These guitars are a must if you want a Mexico telecaster that plays, looks, feels and sounds better than alot of USA built models... Alot of the new Vintera models have Alder bodies now whereas the Baja has an Ash body.... You can still pick these up cheaper than a Vintera... The Baja is a better guitar than the Vintera in almost every way.

    hard to compare pickups with drastically different guitars. An sg and a les paul will sound different with the exact same pickups. Sg's have more high end/mid range and a little bit of a thinner sound. Les pauls have more low end w/ more sustain, esspecially if it has a mahogony body.

  • @davidberg4682
    @davidberg4682 5 месяцев назад

    Unfortunately, you're not really comparing the pickups (at least not ONLY the pickups). You are mostly comparing two VERY different guitars that sound very different even with the exact same pickups in each of them. Also, and this is a biggy, it is next to impossible to really hear what a pickup sounds like with so much distortion. A good (not perfect) comparison would be pickups installed in the SAME kind of guitar with NO distortion. I say "good, not perfect" because even two of the same kind of guitars can sound a bit different. A "perfect" comparison would be the different pickups installed into the very same guitar with and without distortion (mostly without). So, clean up your act and clean up your guitars and spend the time and effort to do a reasonably useful comparison next time.

      I half agree. While I don’t expect a guitar of this price range to have a perfect setup I do think Squier(Fender) could do a better job giving it a ballpark setup. This thing was not even close to having a setup. That’s not an issue for me as I have been doing my own setups for 30 years but a beginner could get turned off on trying to learn because they can’t play on an instrument that’s unplayable but they have no idea those things can be adjusted.

    The pick guard looks great! I was going to do something similar while keeping two pickups and knobs. The knob layout on these things lends itself to doing just that, so well done. I just got a hundred dollar one on ebay, and I also don't particularly like the bad version of tobacco sunburst. Real tobacco burst was brown around golden ochre yellow, not black over yellow orange. I don't know who would have thought that was a good idea. I got it to swap to P90s, but the orginal humbuckers sound pretty good, and like the finish, it's a guitar for around the house... so all of it stays (at least for now). I did get cheap chrome pickup covers, and the triangle(ish) shaped regular LP pickguard under ten bucks, and I'll decide if it's worth installing when it gets here. Anyway, the P90 you installed sounds great. Good job overall. Nice vid. ...edited to add that it's great that you played Blitzkrieg Bop as a demo. Great!!

      I have had success with Guitar fetish pickups which are reasonably priced and pretty nice quality. I like the Earl Slick line of pickups best. However, that being said in recent years I have really found you get what you pay for with pickups. While yes, you can go the more affordable route and get pretty good stuff if you're willing to spend a few bucks more you almost always get a better sounding/quality pickup.
